America's wild horses and burros are facing their biggest threat since the passage of the Wild and Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971. Every herd is at risk due to a plan called, 10 Years to AML: The Path Forward for Management of BLM’s Wild Horses and Burros.
The "Path Forward" proposal is a calculated attempt to eradicate wild horses, all for the benefit of ranchers and special interests to dominate and profit off public lands in the USA.
If allowed to be implemented, the plan would decimate wild horse herds, burden taxpayers, and put the horses at risk for slaughter and permanent sterilization. It's imperative that we oppose the plan in order to protect the horses and our public lands that are already being exploited and destroyed by the livestock, oil and mining industries.
On June 25, 2019 the U.S. House passed their FY 2020 appropriations bill (H.R.3055) which included $6 million to fund a "pilot program" for The Path Forward plan. Then on September 26, 2019 the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee voted to allocate a staggering $35 million dollars to the program. The good news is that the Senate and the House haven't reached an agreement on the final FY 2020 funding bill.
HELP THE WILD HORSES
Please take action by calling your U.S. Representative and two U.S. Senators. Tell them you don't want your tax dollars allocated to fund the Path Forward pilot program in FY 2020 spending bills that would mandate mass removals of wild horses, force birth control on 90% of the mares, and allocate funds for "private partnership" contracts that will be given to ranchers. Please emphasize that this plan is the agenda of the livestock industry, not the majority of humane organizations or the will of the American public. In our current climate crisis, it's more important than ever that we reduce the number of livestock grazing on our public lands, not wild horses.
